Recognising our strengths
'Outward Bound', our journey begins and the unfolding story continues. We have recognised our strengths and identified where we are heading, with our goals giving us a clear focus for the year. With each step we take along this journey we will face challenges and learn how to persevere and apply effort in order to succeed.

INTERNATIONAL DAY
This week we have had students from Shotoku School in Gifu Japan visiting our school. There were four adults and around eight to ten Shotoku students. On Tuesday we had an assembly to celebrate them coming to our school and country. Mr Galloway and the headmaster of Shotoku School signed a contract to make G.S.N.S friends with Shotoku school for the next four years.
On Friday we had another assembly to celebrate International Day. The students from Japan did a dance on the stage for us. Everyone from G.S.N.S went up on stage starting with Room 8 to parade in their costumes. The assembly lasted about 50 minutes in total including getting ready. There were four kids up on the stage organising things like when to come up on stage in the parade and talking and saying thank-you. Here are some pictures of the day…

Hiwi the Kiwi
HIWI THE
KIWI GOES FISHING
There I was sitting in
the hall eagerly waiting with my hand up, wanting to know if Hiwi the Kiwi was
going to pick me to go up on stage to tell a scary true story that happened to
me on a boat. Suddenly he pointed at me or at least around me. I stood up and went
to the stage and walked up the stairs. I was on the stage. “Yes,” I thought to
myself. He asked me my name and I told him my name was Joseph. Then he asked me
if they called me Jo. I said, “Sometimes.” Hiwi the Kiwi told me to tell the crowd the scary
story about when I was on a boat, so I did.
It went like this:
“I went out in a boat
one time in a storm with my dad, my sister, my uncle and me. The boat hit a big
wave and went 1.5 metres in the air. I felt sick afterwards and that was it,” I
said.
Then Hiwi asked me if we
were wearing life jackets. “Yes,” I said.
He said, “Good because a
life jacket really will save your life.” Then he gave me a prize. I got a
poster, a sticker and a fishing magazine.
I left the stage and
returned to my seat.

Analysis of Outdoor Education
This week using a Y chart we analysed the activities we participated in during Camp and Adventure Week. A 'Y chart' focuses on what the activity Looks Like, Sounds Like and Feels Like. We were able to show many perspectives and insights into how the children experienced and viewed these activities. This brainstorm and the development of vocabulary will support our writing next week when we begin our recounts.
